Attending church services has always been very important to people in Anderson County. Through the years many churches and denominations have been established. Predominant denominations were the Catholic Church and the Protestant denominations of Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterian, and the United Brethren Churches. About every town had a church of some type either Catholic or Protestant and several had two or three churches. There were several churches out in the country away from the town locations.
Churches were place for people to gather not only to worship God, but also to visit, have dinners, weddings and funerals. In some communities it was the only places for people to gather other than schools for social time to visit and communicate with others.
The first Catholic Church in Anderson County was St. Boniface on a hill east of the town of Scipio. It was close to the Pottawatomie Creek where people could live close to water and wood.
There were seven Catholic Churches in Anderson County. The other churches were the churches St. Teresa of Avilla in Westphalia, St. Patrick's Church in the community of Emerald, St. John the Baptist Church in Greeley, Holy Angels Church in Garnett, Holy Cross north of Westphalia 5 miles north and one mile west, and
