Cemeteries of Anderson County, Kansas

Anderson county has thirty-three public cemeteries, eleven private burial sites, two cemeteries totally destroyed, two cemeteries partially destroyed and one cemetery where the headstones were moved to another cemetery and the original site abandoned. Some of the private burial sites have no markers and are cultivated fields. The earliest burials were in northeast Anderson County near the town of Greeley. Valentin Gerth, the first settler of Anderson County buried his parents on a hill south of Greeley. The following is a list of cemeteries and their locations and GPS coordinates across the county. The oldest cemeteries in Anderson County are probably Greeley City Cemetery and St. Boniface Cemetery at Scipio. Valentine Gerth, his wife and some of his children are buried in the Greeley City Cemetery.

Anderson County is divided into four quarters: Northwest--NW; Northeast--NE; Southwest--SW; and Southeast--SE. Some of the roads are marked with the quarter designation and others are not. When following the directions pay attention to the numbers and names for the roads as the quarter designation is not on all the road signs so none are included in the directions to the cemeteries.

A map of cemetery locations is available at the Anderson County Historical Society Museum when they are open. They are open May 1st through September 30th, Tuesday through Friday, 11-3 and Saturday's 1-4. Cost of the map is $1.00. The Anderson County Clerk's Office in the Courthouse also has maps for a fee and the Clerk's Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. except on holidays.
